Bulky waste collection fees to be introduced

Tower Hamlets Council is to introduce fees for the collection of residential bulky waste.
From 6th June 2012 fees will be charged for the collection of larger items of waste such as furniture and beds. 
Fees have been set at a competitive rate to ensure that residents can continue to benefit from the bulky waste collection service provided in the borough. Collections will cost £15 for up to five items, with residents in receipt of housing benefits entitled to two free collections each year.
The collection service allows for residents to dispose of any unwanted bulky furniture such as fridge/freezers, cookers, washing machines, beds, futons, sofas, wardrobes and televisions. DIY or builders' waste cannot be collected as part of this service.
For residents who have to pay for the service, payments will be taken by debit or credit cards at the time of booking an appointment. No appointments will be booked without prior payment. Appointments can be booked by telephone on 020 7364 5004.
For residents who have suitable transport, unwanted bulky items can be taken free of charge to the Reuse and Recycling Centre at Northumberland Wharf. Where possible, the bulky waste will be sorted for reuse or recycling.
