last modified  22/06/2011 13:00 PM

Local MP Jim Fitzpatrick visited the Bede estate in Mile End recently to open a new block of affordable homes built by EastendHomes.

John Riley House is named after the former Tower Hamlets Councillor who served on the council for over 30 years from 1968 to 1994.

The new block of 16 affordable homes for rent is part of EeH regeneration project at Bede estate which will eventually see a total of 82 new affordable homes built for local people. The estate will also benefit from a range of other improvements and repair work.

John Riley served as a Councillor in Tower Hamlets for over 30 years, representing both Limehouse and Shadwell wards. He was a former Mayor of the borough and leader of the Labour group on the Council.

The regeneration of the Bede estate is part of EeH  estate renewal programme being undertaken in partnership with Telford Homes.  The construction of new homes for affordable rent is being supported by funding from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA).

In opening the block MP Jim Fitzpatrick said that he was delighted to have the opportunity to open this new block of much needed affordable homes for local people, adding that this was another success story for Eastend Homes.

Martin Young, Chair of EastendHomes said that the scheme was an important contribution towards meeting the need for new and improved homes in the borough and praised the residents of Bede estate for their support and understanding whilst building and improvement work takes place on the estate in and around their homes.
