11th April 2005
The transfer of the Mile End estates from Tower Hamlets Council to EastendHomes was completed on Monday 11th April.
This marked the end of almost two years of work following the selection of EastendHomes by the Steering Group made up of residents from the British Street, Eric & Treby, Brokesley and Bede estates.
Tenants voted in May last year to transfer to EastendHomes and since then detailed work has been ongoing in preparation for the formal transfer and the commencement of services.
For the initial three months, housing services for the Mile End estates will be provided from the former local housing office based in Southern Grove. In June work will be completed on a new housing centre for Mile End at Wager Street on the Bede estate.
Work on the £40m investment programme for the Mile End estates will also begin in the summer. New kitchens and bathrooms are part of the initial package of works for tenants, with the main contracts for the overall repair and improvements to the estates following on later in the year.
